Thaipusam is one of the most important, interesting and colourful festivals in the Hindu calendar.

This is a tour YOU, your visitors and photographers SHOULD NOT MISS!

Our guide Charlotte Chu will tell us about the legends and rituals of Thaipusam.

Devotees at the festival seek blessings and fulfil their vows by carrying milk pots as offerings. On the day of the festival devotees shave their heads, enter a trance like state and undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while carrying their ''kavadi''; an ornate structure of steel or wood which is fixed to the body of the devotee with steel hooks and rods that pierce the flesh.

The devotees carry the heavy richly decorated kavadis from the temple in Serangoon Road to a second Hindu temple 4 km away.

The procession is wonderfully colourful and you will enjoy the atmosphere of music, chanting and clapping from the participants and the onlookers. We see the preparations for the walk at the first temple, then our bus takes us to the second temple where you can witness the devotees complete the ceremony.

Please dress modestly and put on 'easy to slip-off' shoes. Bring some water and an umbrella. Please book through the website or visit the BA office. This is a tour shared with the German Association. Any queries please contact tours@britishassociation.org.sg.
